Chapter 1

Umamusume: My Umamusume Is a Ghost! [1] & Synopsis

With no memory of his past, Rei Sumikawa arrived at Tracen Academy.

After three years there as a Trainer, Rei Sumikawa began to feel that the way the Umamusume looked at him was getting stranger and stranger. Why were they always staring at him? Why were they touching his legs? Weren’t they supposed to be friends?!

Just as the atmosphere around him grew more and more unsettling, an amnesiac girl dressed in black suddenly fell from the sky.

Black hair. Golden eyes. A figure like the night sky itself.

After that, the emotions the Umamusume had been holding back erupted completely, and Rei Sumikawa was left at their mercy.

It was not until many years later that Rei Sumikawa finally learned the truth.

The one who had driven the Umamusume to toy with him was the very girl he had picked up. Her true identity was a departed legend: the strongest and most wicked Umamusume in history. Her name was—

“Sunday Silence.”

An endless expanse of emerald grass stretched into the distance as three figures—red, yellow, and blue—split across the racecourse.

Umamusume were spirits born to run. Legend said the ones who created them were the Three Goddesses. They were the supreme deities of this world, and also the world’s very first Umamusume.

The red goddess was named Darley Arabian. She represented the courage of Umamusume, and had once hung the sun in the sky for this world, lighting the land below.

The blue goddess was named Godolphin Barb. She represented the emotions of Umamusume. The world existed because of love, and love could nourish all things; she had poured the oceans over the world and watered the soil.

The yellow goddess was named Byerley Turk. She represented the discipline of Umamusume. Without discipline, nothing could take shape; upon her shoulders rested the earth on which Umamusume ran.

The iron tread of the three deities thundered with overwhelming force, and the boundless green grass trembled beneath their feet.

Darley Arabian was the first to push harder. Her fiery red hair cracked through the wind with sharp snaps, her red coat wrapped around her brown skin. Her iron tread came down, and the ground beneath it charred black.

Godolphin Barb followed close behind. Her pale legs blurred into afterimages as she bent low and stepped hard into the ground. Her supple ankles curved at an impossible angle, as if her whole body had been drawn taut like a bow. Godolphin turned into a streak of blue light, and a deafening sound split the air.

And as the two goddesses accelerated, Byerley Turk refused to fall behind. Her sturdy soles smashed into the turf, the tremendous impact no less violent than a comet striking the earth. The yellow goddess tore through the ground and surged forward.

The three deities who had created Umamusume had all run at their absolute limits. A sight once worthy of being called a miracle was unfolding on this grass.

Yet at this moment, the Three Goddesses were neither sparring nor putting on a performance.

They were racing.

Yes. Racing.

Their opponent was not one another, but the black-clad girl behind them.

“Hah…”

As if she meant to drain the entire grass field of air, the girl opened her mouth. Her black hair streamed behind her like a cloak, and her golden eyes shone bright as stars in the night sky.

After the Three Goddesses accelerated, she slowly lowered her body.

BANG!

Something seemed to explode beneath her feet.

The blades of grass flung into the air froze in midair.

The girl moved.

In an instant, darkness fell before the goddesses’ eyes.

A shadow passed over their heads. The grass remained suspended in the air, yet the black-clad girl had already vanished.

BANG!

Another crisp sound rang out.

Compared with the Three Goddesses, the sound she made was far quieter, yet it was clear and pleasing to the ear. Her legs lashed against the ground like boneless willow switches, and her eyes left a long, thin golden line through the air.

The Three Goddesses looked back at the sound.

Then they saw the black-haired girl closing in on them at terrifying speed.

“Haha! Interesting!”

With a ringing laugh, they kicked off once more.

Red, yellow, blue—and that bottomless black—split the endless field of grass in two.

“This is the Last Spurt, little one!” Darley Arabian grinned. Flames rose beneath her feet, and the entire track turned scorching hot. Beside her, Godolphin Barb’s footsteps gave off a dreadful rumbling, as if a tsunami had burst beneath her soles.

Last of all, Byerley Turk gave a cold snort, and the ground began to crack apart in great sheets.

The Three Goddesses became three streaks of red, yellow, and blue light. The grass surged beneath them like a living sea.

Yet faced with that running form, worthy of being called a miracle, the black-haired girl behind them only sharpened her gaze.

The swing of her body grew wider and wider. Every muscle seemed to flow, from her shoulders to her arms to her waist, and the time her body remained suspended in the air grew longer and longer.

Half a body length!

Her speed had reached its absolute limit. At this moment, less than half a body length separated her from the Three Goddesses!

The girl was not a deity, nor did she possess any special power. She was only an ordinary human—or rather, she had once been one.

Hearing the sound behind them, the goddesses were moved once again.

“Interesting. As expected, you’re the only one who can bring us such unexpected surprises!”

The Three Goddesses spoke her name.

“Sunday Silence!”

Her waist, thighs, calves, and ankles all twisted into motion—every muscle in the girl’s body compressed violently like springs. The instant she landed, the tips of her feet touched the ground, and all the energy gathered through her body erupted at once. A step that looked light and effortless stamped the ground completely inward, leaving a deep pit behind.

And now, the black-clad girl was only a head short of the Three Goddesses!

Just a little more. Just a little more!

One more step, and I can beat these Three Goddesses down. Beat them down hard!

Yet as if they had heard her thoughts, the Three Goddesses said, “What a shame, Sunday Silence. This time… you’re still one step short.”

White light flickered before her eyes, and the four of them slowly came to a stop.

Sunday Silence braced her hands on her knees and gasped for breath.

Darley Arabian walked up to her and raised two fingers.

“Second time,” she said.

“This is the second time you’ve challenged us, and you lost again.”

Her golden eyes fixed coldly on the deity before her. Facing the Three Goddesses who had created Umamusume, the Three Goddesses revered by the world, there was only loathing in her heart.

The Three Goddesses had abandoned her.

And she had abandoned the Three Goddesses in turn.

“You are the most interesting person we have ever seen, but failing twice in a row is starting to bore me.”

“Oh my, Darley, you mustn’t say that.” Godolphin Barb walked over. “Silence-chan is working hard too. It’s just that this isn’t something she can accomplish through effort as she is now.”

“No matter how hard the dead struggle, nothing will change. If you wish to break through, you must be reborn.” Byerley adjusted her hat and stepped up before her.

“So, for the sake of bringing us another interesting race next time, we’ll have to ask you to do something even more interesting.” Darley Arabian smiled.

“Three Goddesses… you bastards.” Sunday Silence clenched her teeth.

“Third time’s the charm. What comes next will be your final chance. I hope your new life will let you run an even more interesting race.”

“What are you planning to do?”

Darley Arabian swiped a finger through the air. Beneath Sunday Silence’s feet, something seemed to cut open the ground, revealing a white rift. She fell into it in an instant. Wind howled past her ears, and by the time she came back to herself, Sunday Silence was high in the sky, with the faces of the Three Goddesses looking down from above.

“Live again, Sunday Silence. Don’t bore us.”

Godolphin Barb waved to her lightly. Byerley Turk folded her arms, while Darley Arabian lifted a finger upward. The rift slowly closed.

Looking at those three figures standing high above her, Sunday Silence reached out.

“Three Goddesses… I will never… never forgive you!!”

“Oh? Now that is something to look forward to.”

“Show us your rebellion, former legend.”

“Hehe.”

Amid the laughter of the Three Goddesses, Sunday Silence fell toward the earth.

T/N: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, idk if the goddesses were going easy though but sunday silence upscale?!
