Chapter 15

Umamusume: My Umamusume Is a Ghost! [15]

After Rei returned from the Director’s office, the day wore on until it was time for afternoon training.

The team had assembled at the training grounds. King Halo stood at the front, with Cafe, Tachyon, Silence, and Cheval lined up before her. Since Teio was Student Council president, she could only come after finishing her work and had to train separately from everyone else. That was also why Teio did not want to be president—she could not even train with the others!

“All right, start warming up,” King Halo ordered.

As team captain, she always had everyone prepare in advance before Rei arrived.

“Silence, I’ll show you how to loosen up. This is your first training session, right? Everyone else, do what you normally do.”

“Yes,” they answered.

After sending the others off to warm up, King Halo looked at the black-haired girl in front of her.

To be honest, she was a little worried that Silence might have noticed what had happened that morning. After all… King Halo had heard her voice too. She had meant to stop, but whether Rei had been nervous or excited, his muscles had kept twitching, and she had lost control of herself…

Now that she thought about it, she had been unbelievably bold! Silence had been right beside them. How could she have done something like that?!

She didn’t notice, right? Surely she didn’t…

King Halo studied Silence’s face intently.

“Captain King?”

“Eh?! Ah…” Startled by Silence’s voice, King Halo hurriedly came back to her senses. “W-what is it, Silence?”

“You were staring off into space, Captain King, so I called your name.”

“Oh… Sorry. I got a little distracted.”

King Halo patted her cheeks, forcing those distracting thoughts from her mind. This was training time. What was she doing thinking about irrelevant things?!

Still, judging by Silence’s expression, she probably had not noticed. Otherwise, she would not be acting so calm.

King Halo quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

“By the way, Captain King.”

“Hmm?”

“Did that thing taste good?”

CRACK!

King Halo could almost hear her sanity shattering.

“Y-you saw it, Silence?! You saw everything?!”

She shrieked in mortification as though someone had stepped on her tail.

“Saw what?” Silence tilted her head.

“I mean… that…”

“That? I was talking about the grilled carrot you recommended at lunch. I’d already taken the carrot rice bowl, so I wanted to ask whether the grilled carrot was good.”

“Oh… that.”

“What were you talking about, Captain King?”

“That! I was talking about that too! It was delicious—big and firm, with thick juice bursting into your mouth with every bite. I can still taste it.”

“I see. Then I’ll try it next time.” Silence nodded.

King Halo cleared her throat, then began teaching her how to stretch. They stood back-to-back, linked their elbows, and took turns lifting each other.

Not long afterward, Rei arrived and greeted everyone while they were warming up.

“You’ve already started.”

“Trainer! You’re late again!”

“Filling out the forms took a little longer than expected. But King already got everyone started for me. That’s my team captain! Thanks, King.”

“At least you realize it…” King Halo sighed and continued stretching with Silence.

“All right, everyone, come over here. These are your training plans for today.”

Once everyone had finished warming up, Rei clapped his hands and called them over.

“And this one is for Silence.”

Silence’s training plan had been specially tailored to her.

Because of her baffling running form, she did not need better technique; she needed to build a body capable of withstanding her own power. As Rei replayed her run in his mind, he noticed a problem.

Silence’s endurance was completely disproportionate to her speed.

In other words, with the same level of endurance, Silence could keep going several hundred meters farther than other Umamusume.

That was strange. Logically, she should have run out of strength and fallen long before completing her last run, yet she had forced herself through an entire lap. Her stamina should have been exhausted much earlier, so how had she lasted that long?

What had kept her running?

Rei did not know the reason, but he was certain it was nothing good. At the hospital, Silence’s body had felt strangely insubstantial, almost as though all the strength had been drained from her muscles. That was not something commonly seen in an Umamusume.

Clearly, she had burned something else as fuel, allowing her to run so fast.

To prevent anything unexpected from happening, Rei needed to take meticulous care of Silence’s body.

“Silence, make sure you eat properly, got it?” Rei said, rubbing the girl’s head.

“Yes. I’ll do everything you say, Trainer.”

She smiled faintly and answered in a gentle voice.

Oh… She’s so obedient!

Rei loved well-behaved Umamusume.

Cafe was very obedient too. She always liked sitting close beside him while they read books and drank coffee together. He still remembered asking Cafe whether there was anywhere she wanted to go, only for her to reply:

“As long as I’m with Trainer, I’ll be happy wherever we go.”

She was far too sweet!

Rei felt that marrying Cafe would undoubtedly make him very happy.

Silence not only looked like Cafe, but was just as obedient. Rei liked that very much.

Without realizing it, he began stroking the girl’s ears much more affectionately. King Halo glanced at him with displeasure from beside them, while Silence looked down at the training plan in her hands.

This seems quite good. He even included a diet plan. It looks like Kita and the others weren’t lying. Trainer really is skilled at taking care of an Umamusume’s body, which is exactly what I currently lack.

If I can make him mine, he’ll undoubtedly become a tremendous asset.

That means I need to identify everyone close to him and work out how to take him away from them.

With that thought, Silence began observing everyone closely. She wanted to know exactly how many people had designs on Trainer—and how many people Trainer had designs on in return.

She soon noticed the same unconscious expression on Agnes Tachyon’s and Cheval Grand’s faces whenever they looked at Rei.

Yet Rei’s expression remained unchanged whether he was dealing with the eccentric Agnes Tachyon or the timid Cheval Grand.

Normally, a person’s expression would vary depending on whom they were looking at and how they felt about them.

But this man wore exactly the same expression with every Umamusume.

That even included King Halo that morning!

No way…

Silence frowned.

To her surprise, this man… seemed willing to accept any Umamusume who came his way!
