Chapter 98

My Only Oshi, Jeanne! [98]

Was Laurent looking forward to it?

Of course he was.

He just didn’t know the steps.

But he understood one thing: this time, their direction might finally be right.

If they succeeded, they’d make a wish afterward.

He wasn’t a magus, though—there were plenty of things he couldn’t fully wrap his head around.

His power was divine in nature. He didn’t need to study gemstones or thaumaturgical formulas the way magi did.

Still, he could grasp the basics.

And so the research began, with the four of them.

First, they needed a site. The leylines on the Tohsaka estate were more than sufficient—but since this was summoning, closer to calling a familiar, the location clearly wasn’t going to work.

So they moved their experiments to Ryuudou Temple.

At the start, it was failure after failure. Their magical energy simply wasn’t enough.

Hundreds? Thousands of failures?

Laurent didn’t care.

Back in the Einzbern castle, he’d endured at least ten thousand failures. These were just paving stones on the road to success. His resolve never wavered.

Justeaze, in truth, had known how to make it work from the beginning.

But she didn’t do it.

Ten years.

In those ten years—setting aside the time spent on research—Justeaze devoted everything else to Laurent.

Shopping with him. Going out with him. Enjoying the world’s beauty. Savoring every small detail of daily life.

Until the final steps, the two of them lived almost like family.

And for Laurent as he was now, this amount of research time was barely a drop in the bucket.

Then the last year was almost upon them.

Zouken Matou and Nagato Tohsaka sat on the ground, exhausted, shaking their heads.

“No good. No good,” Zouken muttered. “We’re completely out of magical energy. If we keep going, we’ll drain ourselves dry.”

“Shame I can’t contribute,” Laurent said, looking perfectly fine as he stood there.

Still, if they kept getting nowhere, he’d take Justeaze back this year.

That was what he was thinking—until he realized something was off about her today.

She went to Nagato Tohsaka first and made a small adjustment to his magic circle. Then she placed something at its center.

After that, she did the same to Zouken Matou.

Both of them stared at her, confused, not understanding what any of it meant. Justeaze didn’t explain. She simply walked to her own circle and made the same modifications.

Then she set something down.

Avalon—the relic of King Arthur.

Compared to the other two, Justeaze’s “object” was on a completely different level.

Zouken Matou couldn’t help joking, “Hey—don’t tell me you’re trying to summon King Arthur. You even hauled one of the old Einzbern’s heirloom all the way here.”

“And this is completely unfair, isn’t it? What Nagato and I put down doesn’t even look like anything.”

“Isn’t it a girl’s privilege to show off a little~?” Justeaze said, leaning into it with cute bravado. “I’m putting everything on this summon.”

“Yeah, yeah, I can see that,” Zouken snorted. “No one uses an heirloom just to summon a familiar.”

“You don’t actually think you’ll successfully summon a Heroic Spirit, do you? Tch. You’ll just end up like us and call out some weird thing again.”

Justeaze ignored him.

“Nagato. Zouken. Try summoning one more time.”

“In a moment, I’ll count down—three, two, one. We do it together.”

She smiled the way she always did.

Even Laurent arched a brow at the circles. Something about them felt… off.

Come to think of it, he still didn’t know what the “Heroic Spirits” the system had mentioned before actually were. He’d asked more than once, and Nagato Tohsaka and Zouken Matou had both looked utterly clueless.

All they knew was that it meant summoning powerful familiars.

When Laurent tried asking Justeaze directly, she brushed him off and refused to tell him.

She even specifically warned him not to ask anyone else—no magus would know, she insisted.

He’d asked for years and gotten nothing. A few times she’d even tricked him—promising she’d tell him on a date, then never doing it.

Now, looking at the three magic circles spaced apart, Laurent couldn’t help wondering what she was planning.

“In a moment, you’ll pour in your magical energy,” Justeaze said, “and then just shout along with me.”

Zouken Matou was drenched in sweat, his voice hoarse. “Come on. Give us a minute. We really don’t have any magical energy left. If you want to try, do it yourself.”

“Don’t worry,” Justeaze said. Her smile was radiant. “This time, it’ll definitely work.”

It was hard to tell what that smile meant.

But after being together for ten years, Zouken Matou and Nagato Tohsaka didn’t suspect her.

So they raised their hands and began moving in sync with her.

“One last time.”

“Of course.”

“”I SHALL DECLARE HERE. YOUR BODY SHALL SERVE UNDER ME. MY FATE SHALL BE WITH YOUR SWORD. SUBMIT TO THE BECKONING OF THE HOLY GRAIL. IF YOU WILL SUBMIT TO THIS WILL AND THIS REASON… THEN ANSWER!””

“”AN OATH SHALL BE SWORN HERE! I SHALL ATTAIN ALL VIRTUES OF ALL OF HEAVEN. I SHALL HAVE DOMINION OVER ALL EVILS OF ALL OF HELL!—FROM THE SEVENTH HEAVEN, ATTENDED TO BY THREE GREAT WORDS OF POWER, COME FORTH FROM THE RING OF RESTRAINT, PROTECTOR OF THE BALANCE!””

The two of them recited her lines, then forced out the last of their magical energy.

And this time—

Something unbelievable happened.

Fwoom!

Three different lights flared at once, illuminating all of Ryuudou Temple.

Zouken Matou and Nagato Tohsaka stared in shock, not understanding what was happening.

And their magical energy—

Why was it being ripped out of their bodies, beyond their control?

Hey, Justeaze—what the hell is going on?!

But that was only the beginning.

A moment later, human silhouettes began to take shape inside the circles before them.

A flood of information slammed into their minds so suddenly they could barely process it.

“…I ask of you. Are you my Master?”

Magical energy.

An immense amount—several times, dozens of times beyond an ordinary magus’s limits.

Even the pressure in that presence wasn’t something a normal person could endure.

Zouken Matou and Nagato Tohsaka stared, stunned—then turned ecstatic, thinking they’d succeeded by sheer luck.

“Justeaze, we did it?! That’s a Heroic Spirit? Great! Now the magical energy might finally be enough!”

Zouken was so excited he hurriedly answered his Servant.

“I am your Master.”

The black silhouette before him revealed a skull-like mask, then gave a heavy, muffled acknowledgment.

But before they could even finish reacting, Justeaze’s voice cut through—

“Saber. I am your Master. Now go kill their Servants and win this for me!”

This time, even Laurent’s face—already surprised—went completely still.

What… is going on?

Justeaze was hiding a whole lot.
