For the past two days, Gilgamesh had been thinking about a single question.
What did it really mean to become stronger?
Exchange for more Noble Phantasms?
Amass more military force?
That was certainly a valid path to strength. It was the right path, and a simple one. There was no doubt it would work.
In fact, that straightforward, easy-to-understand path was the one Gilgamesh had taken from the very beginning, and it fit the way he had been operating.
He exchanged for Noble Phantasms to increase his offense and defense, exchanged for Holy Grails to extend his mana pool, and, according to his original plan, would soon begin distributing suitable Noble Phantasms to the people of Uruk as well, in order to raise the overall strength of his forces.
That was, of course, assuming he first confirmed that they were actually capable of using Noble Phantasms.
That was also why he had not immediately started handing them out on a large scale, because even in the Age of Gods, people who could use Noble Phantasms for extended periods were still rare.
Once he had achieved agricultural overproduction, he had planned to mooch off the system… or rather, make full use of his own brilliance to improve the people of Uruk physically… at the very least, he had to raise their magical energy.
They could not all be three-second wonders!
That was also why he had exchanged for so many additions to the Gate of Babylon. Of course, part of the reason was definitely his obsessive streak.

“Then I can’t keep doing this the conventional way… Come to think of it, ever since I got the system, haven’t I only ever exchanged for things from the Type-Moon side of things?”
That would not do.
Gilgamesh happened to arrive at his room just then, and with a wave of his hand, he sent away everyone cleaning it.

With the door shut behind him, Gilgamesh finally figured it out.
Right! Why did I have to limit myself to Type-Moon things in the first place?!
Just because Noble Phantasms belonged to the same system as me, so they were easier to use?
Probably. But that would not cut it now! Time was already desperately short! There was no time left to keep getting stronger “within the Type-Moon system”!
No, no, the real mistake had been thinking he had to grow stronger through the Type-Moon system at all.
Right now, he could easily beat ordinary gods—but above gods there were chief gods, and above them creator gods!
And even if, someday, he could beat creator gods, above them there were alien civilizations, and even the easygoing heavy hitter like Saver! Not to mention ORT…
Even after surpassing all of them, that would only mean he could truly rule supreme within the Type-Moon system. But what if there were powerhouses from other worlds whose systems naturally countered Type-Moon?
And even if there were not, would there not still be even stronger systems waiting for him to surpass?
That would not do. If things went on like this, would he not just become some pure stat grinder?
How was he supposed to make use of the enormous advantage the system and the Gate of Babylon had given him if he did that?
Now was not the time to play by the rules.
Once Gilgamesh worked it out, he felt as though a weight had been lifted from his mind, as if the clouds had parted and the sun had come out. His whole body felt lighter.
His state of mind had changed.

“System, I have been a fool.”
Gilgamesh covered part of his face with one hand as the corners of his mouth slowly curled upward.
“Only now do I realize it—you mongrel, and the Gate of Babylon, are my true loves!”
[UH…]
The system had no idea what kind of madness Gilgamesh was on about now, but hearing that still made her a little happy.
[GIL, SO YOU FINALLY UNDERSTAND HOW AMAZING I AM? BUT IF YOU DON’T APOLOGIZE SINCERELY, I’M NOT FORGIVING YOU, YOU KNOW.]
Gilgamesh only smiled and said nothing. He pulled up the system interface and started browsing through it.
“Let’s think about power from outside the system. Let me see.”
“Zafkiel? Good. Taking it.”
[WAIT, GIL, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!]
“Frostmourne? Looks pretty good for clearing mobs. Taking it.”
[GIL! WEREN’T YOU APOLOGIZING TO ME?!]
“What’s this? Judgment of Shamash? Nice. Taking it.”
[GIL!!!]
“Mjolnir? The movie version of Thor’s hammer? Taking it.”
[N-NO… DON’T DO THIS, GIL… WAAAH…]
…
“Good grief.”
After exchanging for a few things that caught his eye, Gilgamesh closed the system interface and rubbed his forehead helplessly as he listened to the sobbing by his ear.
“What kind of embarrassing system are you?”
[WAAAH… (っ╥╯﹏╰╥c)]
“Don’t start using emoticons to act cute!”
[GIL NEVER LISTENS… WAAAH…]
“Sigh…”
Gilgamesh shook his head. As he sensed the dozen or so offensive weapons that had been placed into the Gate of Babylon, he considered whether there was anything else he still needed.
Then it hit him.
Gilgamesh suddenly thought of something.
He opened the Gate of Babylon, and a much larger golden ripple spread out behind him.
A massive clock floated out of it.
Zafkiel.
Through the Gate of Babylon, Gilgamesh connected himself to Zafkiel, and in the next moment, an old-fashioned pistol appeared in his hand.
Feeling Zafkiel’s power, Gilgamesh poured magical energy into it. A shadow floated up from the “I” on the giant clock and entered the muzzle.
He raised the gun to his own temple, finding the experience rather strange.
“This is definitely a first. Shooting myself with a gun and all.”
Gilgamesh muttered to himself, then fired.
BANG!
He felt the world slow down…
No, he had become faster.
After a while, the sensation faded, and his senses returned to normal.
Worth noting: the system had been crying the whole time.
“System.”
[HMPH!]
“System?”
[HMPH! 💢]
“…Quit it.”
[I’M NOT TALKING TO GIL! GIL’S A BAD PERSON!]
Listening to that oddly tsundere voice, Gilgamesh had the strange feeling that the system no longer sounded quite so electronic.
He thought for a moment, then suddenly remembered how Ishtar had pleaded with him earlier.
“There’s something I want to ask you… please. You’re the only one who can help me.”
[ASK. I’M LISTENING.]
“Fuck!”
[EH? EHHH?! Y-YOU… GIL, YOU CAN’T POSSIBLY WANT TO DO THAT, CAN YOU?! I-I-I CAN’T DO THAT!]
“No, no, you’ve got the wrong idea.”
Gilgamesh rubbed his forehead again. He had still underestimated just how embarrassing this system could be.
“Forget that for now.”
It took Gilgamesh a good while to recover his serious mood.
“I have one question. Are you the only one?”
[YES. I’M THE ONLY ONE.]
“Then…”
Gilgamesh looked at Zafkiel’s sixth bullet and twelfth bullet.
“Am I… the only one?”
