Chapter 31

I’m Going to Add a Few More Things to the Gate of Babylon! [31]

“Marriage?”

Enkidu looked at the plaque in their hands and blinked in confusion.

“No. Impossible!”

They immediately denied it, even pointing a finger at Gilgamesh.

“You’re deceiving me. I didn’t expect you to be not only brutal, but a skilled liar as well.”

“Nonsense!”

Gilgamesh glared at the unruly citizens behind Enkidu.

“What madness have you mongrels been spouting? What did you tell this thing?”

The residents all shook their heads and began talking over one another.

“This is the will of the gods, my king.”

“That’s right, that’s right. My king, please don’t refuse.”

“Isn’t this girl beautiful?”

When Enkidu heard that, they turned back in shock to look at the crowd.

“I am not a woman! No—what are you people even talking about?!”

They looked as though they had been betrayed, their beautiful eyes wide. Judging by that face alone, there was even something delicate and pitiful about them.

“I clearly came here to restrain Gilgamesh, yet for the sake of a little temporary peace, you’re prepared to offer me up?”

When the residents heard that, they only grew more excited.

“Male? Even better.”

“No, wait. They can be male or female? Isn’t that twice the fun?”

“Offspring and entertainment, both solved. Not bad at all.”

Hearing this, Gilgamesh was completely dumbfounded.

What kind of insane plot were these people imagining?

While Gilgamesh was distracted, Enkidu recovered from their shock as well. They pointed at the residents several times, wanting to say something, but no words came out.

“So be it.”

Enkidu recalled something the sacred prostitute who had taught them and given them reason had once said.

“If you wish to accomplish something great—especially something great enough to break the existing vested-interest groups—the obstacles you face will be immense. At such times, anyone may betray you.”

But that did not mean one could give up. This was their mission.

As long as one had enough resolve, one could defeat anyone.

Enkidu’s gaze grew firm once more.

“They have chosen to run away from this, but the meaning of my existence is to restrain you.”

Light emerged from their body. It was condensed power—the power of the strongest Divine Construct weapon.

“If they want to offer me to you, then come take me yourself, if you have the ability!”

“No. Absolutely not. This king has no interest in crossing swords.”

Gilgamesh hurriedly shook his head, reluctance written all over his face.

Although he was fairly tolerant of such things and considered them a matter of personal preference, he himself did not like crossing swords!

Wait.

He suddenly realized something.

Enkidu could be male or female…

Then he looked again at that beautiful face, and Gilgamesh suddenly felt a little tempted… ptooey, ptooey, ptooey.

By the time he came back to his senses, Enkidu had already charged at him.

And those unruly citizens still looked as though they were watching a show, every last one of them perfect spectators there for the drama.

“The king and queen are flirting!”

Hearing that, Gilgamesh cursed inwardly while dodging the knife-hand strike Enkidu slashed at him.

“Fool! No matter how one looks at it, this is clearly a misunderstanding!”

“But your tyranny is real, and my mission is to correct you.”

Enkidu answered without slowing their hands in the slightest.

As a weapon, every part of their body could be used as a killing armament. Even ordinary punches and kicks carried unmatched divine strength.

Gilgamesh frowned. He drew a sword from Gate of Babylon and clashed it against Enkidu’s knife-hand.

Clang!

It was the sound of metal striking metal. Gilgamesh was surprised to find that, with his strength, he had actually lost to Enkidu by a margin.

Looks like I really do need to improve my own strength once I get back.

Of course, later was later, and now was now. He was still very interested in crossing blows with Enkidu.

Clang!

Gilgamesh knocked Enkidu’s arm aside. Golden ripples appeared behind him, and Noble Phantasms shot out from within, bringing a wave of displaced air with them.

This was the fighting style he knew best.

But Enkidu was no pushover either. After cleaving through several of the incoming Noble Phantasms, they released balls of light from their hands. The balls of light combined in the air into flat, mouth-like shapes.

Chains shot out from within and knocked down Gilgamesh’s follow-up attacks.

“You would trade volleys with this king, Enkidu?”

Gilgamesh’s interest rose again, but when he thought about the residents of Uruk still being nearby, he—

“Tch. Where did those mongrels run off to?”

Gilgamesh looked back and saw that even the city gates had been shut.

“King Gilgamesh, do your best! Tie up the queen and bring them back!”

Someone shouted to him from atop the city wall, and he nearly lost his temper and threw a Noble Phantasm over.

“What, can you go all out now?”

Enkidu was not particularly concerned with that. They were wholly focused on fulfilling their mission as a weapon.

Although they had gained wisdom, their essence was still that of a Divine Construct, and they had no ability to resist the gods who had created them.

Naturally, that included the “mission” and “meaning of existence” given to them by Anu, king of the gods, and Aruru, goddess of creation.

“Ha!”

Their knife-hand slashed toward Gilgamesh again. The difference was that this time, chains had already filled the space around them.

Enkidu was a born warrior, and even more so, a born weapon. They understood where their greatest advantage over Gilgamesh lay.

At long range, they could of course fight Gilgamesh evenly for a short period of time, but in a war of attrition, they were at something of a disadvantage.

To create weapons, they still needed earth. Gilgamesh only needed to project weapons out. Even with the support of the land, the workload was still comparatively too great.

So Enkidu had to engage in close combat. And the fact was, in close combat, they could completely suppress Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh also began widening the distance.

If it were the original Gilgamesh, perhaps he really could have relied on martial skill to exchange blows with Enkidu in close combat, but the current him truly could not.

Or rather, whether after crossing over or just a few days ago when he had freeloaded off the system, Gilgamesh had never positioned himself as a close-combat expert, nor had he developed in that direction.

The few things he did have were mostly defensive items he had exchanged for.

So he had to open up the distance and kite.

BANG!

Enkidu knocked another sword aside and charged at Gilgamesh, only to be blasted back again.

They had already fought like this for several kilometers.

“You don’t dare come near me?”

Enkidu shouted at Gilgamesh.

What answered them was dozens of Noble Phantasms shooting toward them, along with Gilgamesh’s gloating voice.

“Then come, if you can!”

“…”

Enkidu once again used chains to knock down the incoming Noble Phantasms. They had never before experienced such a shameless tactic as kiting.

No. Something had to change.

That was the conclusion Enkidu reached after being forced back once more.

And then Gilgamesh saw the earth begin to glow.
