Chapter 4

I’m Going to Add a Few More Things to the Gate of Babylon! [4]

Across the empty plain, four figures dressed in clothes that clearly did not belong to this age made their way forward. Their destination was equally obvious: Uruk.

One of them, a blue-haired child who looked like a little girl, turned to the other three.

“Are you all ready?”

Rimuru asked the companions behind her.

They had to be as prepared as possible. After all, they were about to meet the king who, at this point in time, was still known as a tyrant.

A girl in a black-and-crimson gothic dress, with twin tails and mismatched eyes, answered Rimuru in a voice tinged with helpless amusement.

“Captain, haven’t you already checked that several times?”

“Haha, have I?”

Rimuru laughed and scratched her head.

“Well, this is our first time dealing with someone stronger than us, and our first time in a world this dangerous.”

“Which is exactly why we need to secure whatever strength we can while we still can. That’s why we came here, isn’t it?”

The mature woman beside Kurumi Tokisaki spoke up. Dressed in a white lab coat and glasses, she adjusted them as she finished Rimuru’s thought.

“Exactly, Harumi-senpai.”

The last member of the group—the only man among the four, or at least the only one who looked like one—wore leather armor and had red hair, looking for all the world like an ordinary person.

“But we can’t be sure Gilgamesh will agree to an alliance with us, can we?”

Shirou Emiya sounded uneasy.

In his memory, the image of that man laughing wildly was far too vivid. Even now, he could not forget that absolute, self-centered madness.

“Well, there’s nothing we can do about that, Emiya-san.”

Kurumi shrugged. Before entering this world, she had already looked into some of the basic Type-Moon setting information, and naturally she had not overlooked Gilgamesh’s profile.

“According to the setting, he won’t be easy to deal with, but there’s no reason we have to meet him as equals in an alliance, is there?”

“That makes sense,” Harumi Kiyama said with a nod.

“As long as we lower our heads on the surface and acknowledge him as our king, he should naturally grant his subjects the protection they deserve. And since we’re bringing him a treasure, there’s even less reason for him to make things difficult for us.”

At those words, Shirou’s mouth twitched as old memories surfaced.

“That’s… not necessarily true…”

The four of them discussed how they should handle things after arriving, and before long, Uruk came into view.

A city wall dozens of meters high rose before their eyes, with people constantly passing in and out through its gates.

“Incredible. It’s hard to imagine that humans who had only just emerged from tribal society in ancient times could build a city like this.”

All four of them voiced more or less the same amazement. Looking at the towering walls before them, they felt a strange kind of beauty in them.

“Probably with the help of magecraft,” Harumi said with a sigh of admiration.

“So this is the Age of Gods…”

“Don’t get distracted by that right now,” Rimuru cut in, stopping everyone’s admiration in its tracks.

“We only have about three days of first-mover advantage. We can’t afford to waste time.”

The other three nodded.

Now really was not the time to stand around marveling at how sturdy Uruk’s walls were. In three days, their enemy would arrive in this world as well.

“Stick to the original plan.”

Rimuru took an extravagantly packaged box out of her spatial ring. It was made entirely of gold and inlaid with all kinds of gemstones.

It glittered so brilliantly that not even a golden legend—hell, not even eternal diamond—could compare.

For the last time, Rimuru repeated the plan.

“Shirou and Kurumi will present the treasure. Kiyama and I will find a way into the city and lie low. We’ll cover each other from both sides.”

The moment he heard that, Shirou wanted to complain. He had read Romance of the Three Kingdoms too, you know.

That kind of two-pronged support strategy had practically never worked, okay?

But there was something else he wanted to complain about even more.

“Do we really have to say we came from the Great Tang of the Eastern Lands?”

He raised his concern.

“What’s the problem?”

Rimuru did not care in the slightest.

“No one here even knows what that is. And it’s not like Gilgamesh has Clairvoyance at this point.”

“Unless this Gilgamesh turns out to be a transmigrator too?”

After thinking it over, Shirou had to admit she had a point.

“So, we’re settled then?”

Kurumi took the box from Rimuru.

“Mm. Go on.”

Rimuru gave Kurumi one last solemn reminder.

“Watch your attitude. Don’t antagonize Gilgamesh. You’ve already equipped the spell that can fool detection, so do your best to pass yourselves off as ordinary people.”

“Okay.”

Kurumi and Shirou both nodded.

The four split into pairs, and the two who were going to present the treasure soon arrived at the city gate.

Under Siduri’s puzzled gaze, Gilgamesh first returned to his bedchamber.

“No, no. Absolutely not.”

Gilgamesh hurriedly pulled up the system interface. He had originally planned to finish this tomorrow.

But that was clearly no longer happening.

Could this world get any more ridiculous?

Even Wukong had shown up now.

Seriously, somebody get this absurd world under control.

“Redeem! One-minute single-use [God Hand]!”

“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Kavacha & Kundala]!”

“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Armor of Fafnir]!”

[…]

After redeeming every defensive or life-saving Noble Phantasm he could think of in one go, Gilgamesh finally let out a breath.

“That feels a little safer. But this mana consumption is outrageous.”

Even though most of them were passive equipment, Gilgamesh could still feel the mana drain far exceeding anything from before.

It was not that he could not afford it. It was just that Gilgamesh now suffered from the same common ailment all transmigrators seemed to share:

A pathological fear of insufficient firepower.

“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Lesser Grail]!”

His hand grew heavy as a golden cup appeared in it, overflowing with a completely different kind of magical energy from the Noble Phantasms before—not in nature, but in sheer quantity.

Gilgamesh tossed the Grail into the Gate of Babylon, but still felt it was not quite enough.

“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Lesser Grail]!”
“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Lesser Grail]!”
“Redeem! One-minute single-use [Lesser Grail]!”

[…]
