Chapter 3

I’m Going to Add a Few More Things to the Gate of Babylon! [3]

After enough trial and error, Gilgamesh had more or less figured out what the Gate of Babylon he had come with upon transmigrating could actually do.

In terms of function, it was wildly different from the Noble Phantasm.

Gate of Babylon was a Noble Phantasm from the Type-Moon world. In the hands of the Heroic Spirit Gilgamesh, it was the origin of human wisdom.

Once its concept had been sublimated, this Noble Phantasm could, after manifesting in the world, reproduce most of mankind’s contemporary technology through the power of Mystery as humanity continued to develop.

That was why the inventory of treasures within it kept growing.

Gilgamesh had read all of that in the system’s item description.

But the Gate of Babylon he had come with was completely different.

It would not add new treasures on its own, and aside from not consuming mana, it was practically useless!

And even that barely counted as an advantage. Everyone knew Gate of Babylon consumed next to no mana to begin with.

Looked at that way, this Gate of Babylon was, at best, nothing more than a portable storage bag.

But that absolute simplicity brought absolute returns in certain areas!

“So this is Excalibur?”

Gilgamesh casually swung the holy sword in his hand.

At his feet, several more identical holy swords were stuck in the ground, their tremendous mana surging so violently it nearly disturbed the barrier the priests had set over the audience hall.

There was no doubt about it—every one of them was the A++ Noble Phantasm Excalibur!

Each one had cost Gilgamesh the staggering sum of a whole 10 points!

Ahem.

“I don’t get all the hype.”

After playing around with them for a bit, Gilgamesh quickly lost interest.

As golden light flashed across the holy swords, they were gradually reabsorbed into the Gate of Babylon.

Gilgamesh was actually quite satisfied with that auto-recall function.

It was one of the abilities of the Gate of Babylon he had come with.

As for its strongest function, that would have to be its retention ability.

Anything stored inside the Gate of Babylon would be reshaped into a form suited to Gilgamesh and become part of his collection.

Even weapons redeemed from the system were no exception!

“Very well, system. You have my thanks.”

Gilgamesh thanked it sincerely.

“Seen in that light, neither of these advantages can be called lacking once joined together.”

With only the Gate of Babylon, it would have been an empty shell.

With only the item system, he really would have had to save up for weapons ten years at a time, just like the system said.

But put the two together, and it turned into this.

“Fuhahahaha!”

Gilgamesh laughed.

“To think you would move even me to offer my thanks. Splendid, system!”

A slightly sharper last line, closer to his usual arrogance, would be:

“Truly well done, system.”

[N-NO… DON’T MENTION IT.]

Even the system’s electronic voice no longer sounded so cheerful.

But Gilgamesh could not have cared less.

Unlike before, he was now in high spirits as he enthusiastically flipped through the system’s exchange list.

[POWERED ARMOR]: 250 POINTS

[IRON SUIT (BASIC MODEL)]: 500 POINTS

[GENETIC MUTATION SERUM]: 1,000 POINTS

[GENDERBEND FIELD]: 2,000 POINTS

[EVOLUTION FLUID]: 10,000 POINTS

Who knew how long he had been searching before Gilgamesh finally yawned.

When he glanced outside, he found that dusk had already fallen.

Was I really at it that long?

No, wait. He still had Avalon to redeem. He had nearly forgotten.

As his points dropped once more, a slender sheath appeared in his hand. Gilgamesh barely spared it a glance before tossing it into the Gate of Babylon.

It couldn’t be helped. His standards had risen.

After a minute had passed, he took Avalon back out and merged it into his body.

“Now this is the bare minimum of security. At least I won’t just drop dead to some absurd mishap anymore.”

A deep sense of reassurance welled up inside him, and Gilgamesh declared himself in excellent condition.

What? You’re asking why he had never felt this unsafe before today?

Come on—between a miserable person and a happy one, which do you think would cherish their life more?

The old him had not had much ambition. He had only wanted to coast along, eat, wait for death, and maybe get himself an Ea to play with ten years later.

Back then, every extra day he stayed alive had felt like pure profit.

But now, everything seemed so easily within reach. Happiness had become so easy to obtain.

How could he not start cherishing his life?

That’s right. One of these days, he was going to get things like God Hand too.

Gilgamesh rose to his feet and stretched.

Then he slowly walked out of the temple hall.

“Siduri.”

The moment he stepped outside, he saw Siduri standing by the door as if she had been waiting for him.

“My king, I have something to report.”

Siduri bowed to him.

“Today, two unusual foreigners requested an audience with you.”

“Foreigners?”

He raised a brow.

“What sort of foreigners?”

Gilgamesh asked as he walked, with Siduri following at his side.

It was time for dinner. He was on his way to the place where he usually ate.

“They were dressed very strangely, in clothes I have never seen before. One wore a skintight outfit like leather armor, and the other was dressed in red.”

“Hoh?”

That description piqued Gilgamesh’s interest.

“Priests?”

“I do not believe so. I could sense no mana from them.”

“A man and a woman?”

“One man, one woman.”

“And you deemed this worth reporting to me?”

Gilgamesh glanced back at Siduri.

“If they were merely dressed strangely, you would not have troubled me with it.”

“That is true, my king.”

Siduri agreed, though she also felt that the king seemed to have changed again somehow.

More like how he used to be?

She suppressed her curiosity and continued her report.

“They said they wished to present you with a treasure.”

Gilgamesh nodded.

“Very well. I’ll see them. Bring them in while I dine.”

“One more thing. Where are they from? Another city?”

Siduri shook her head.

“No. Those foreigners claim they came from the East, If I remember correctly they said they came from someplace called the Great Tang?”

Gilgamesh stopped dead in his tracks and turned to stare at Siduri in shock.

“From where did you say?!”
