Sometimes life really did produce little coincidences—like two different classes from two different grades ending up having P.E. at the same time.
P.E. wasn’t exactly a foreign concept to Tadayana. It was just that, thanks to gym teachers so often being mysteriously struck down with poor health, her idea of what P.E. even was had become a little fuzzy. Fortunately, in Japan, P.E. periods were still pretty hard to squeeze out of the schedule.
And so, Tadayana happened to run into Hachiman Hikigaya, who was practicing tennis alone against a wall.

Seeing a boy so solitary that he even had to play tennis by himself against a wall, Tadayana found herself at a loss for how to even begin mocking that.

The look Hikigaya shot her carried a certain warning. After all, if a white-haired beauty like Tadayana carelessly came near someone at the absolute bottom of the social ladder like him, that would only turn him into everyone’s target.

Applause approached from the distance. Yui Yuigahama came over from afar at that moment, looking almost like someone stepping up to present an award in celebration of victory.

That was all Tadayana said in reply.
Once Yui Yuigahama saw the conversation had ended, she immediately started pushing and herding Yumiko Miura’s group away with her.
She didn’t want Tadayana to misunderstand her just because the crowd she hung around with came off as a little too flashy and worldly.
And besides, Tadayana might be the type like Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita—someone who didn’t like having anything to do with outgoing popular girls.
In reality, though, Tadayana wouldn’t have cared at all. In her eyes, in a place as thick with campus atmosphere as Sobu High School, it was hard for anyone to really count as worldly. Even Yumiko Miura’s bunch, to her, were just a pack of kids who still smelled of milk.
Would you care how many kids the children you knew happened to have around them?
Tadayana certainly wouldn’t.
In the distance, Hayato Hayama had just finished up and was wiping away sweat when he looked over this way. He froze for the briefest instant.
That expression and attitude of Tadayana’s had made him think of someone, and it sent a shiver through his whole body.
